Homemade Brownies

It has been 45 years since we first opened our doors to our Restaurant and Truckstop. In 1990 we took a few steps just down the road to open our first travel stop, in Hampden. A quick stop for traveling needs. The idea was for us to sell quick made-to-order food while customers were fueling up. We then opened another stop in Orono, headed over to Newburgh and Holden, and then found another place to make Orrington’s travel stop. Within the past 4 years we have opened three more stops, Pittsfield, then Old Town and just recently Lincoln.

July 16th, 2012 was the first day we opened in Lincoln and what another success it has been so far. Being the 8th convenience store for Dysart’s we have our name well established in Maine. But what is it that has helped us establish our name so well? Could it be our convenience to travelers and locals, or our good homemade meals? Over the years many answers like those have been associated with Dysart’s but the one that stands out the most is... our desserts!

We have cookies, date squares, congo squares, whoopie pies, and brownies galore! Freshly baked everyday at our Restaurant from our homemade recipes, we have a good handle on how to make the sweetest sweets to fill your cravings. We send out these treats to all of our travel stops for customers to enjoy all around Maine.

Our Brownies are sure to fill your chocolate cravings! Stop at any of our travel stops or our restaurant to get one or try our recipe below to bake for your family and friends today!

Brownies

2 squares baking chocolate
½ cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
¾ cup flour, sifted
½ tsp. Baking powder
½ tsp. Salt
½ cup chocolate chips
½ cup nut (optional)

Melt together chocolate and shortening in a double boiler,
being careful not to burn or melt it too quickly.

Beat sugar and eggs in a mixing bowl, and then add the melted chocolate
mixture. In a separate bowl sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.

Stir dry ingredients into the mixing bowl. Fold in your chocolate
chips and nuts (optional).

Spread batter into a well-greased 8x8 pan and bake at 350ยบ for 30-35 minutes.
When the top has a dull crust, test with a toothpick to ensure they are done.

Giant Brownies, $1.75 each
We do not use preservatives in any of our treats. We do freeze them to ensure all treats stay fresh for when we send them out to all of our stores.  Have extras of the batch you made for the family? Freeze the leftovers to enjoy another time!

Add a spin to your brownie by making it a brownie wonder just like we do at our restaurant! Top it with ice cream, whipped cream and hot fudge for a sweet summertime treat!
