Freezing Pies

    Do you ever get sick of using ice to keep your food cold during a trip? Sick of paying for something that is going to melt and be wasted in the end? Don’t worry we’ve got the perfect solution for you...PIE!! I bet you’re a little confused now. We’ll explain with a short story from one of our customers. 

    They came into the restaurant to buy a fully cooked pie that was frozen. They packed up their things and headed out for a canoe trip along the Allagash River. To keep their load light they packed some food and water and of course the pie! They used the frozen pie to keep everything cold. Day one was perfect for keeping their food cold for the day. But day two was the best. You see where the story is going? Day two was the best because the pie had defrosted perfectly by the afternoon, which made the best dessert for lunch. 

Buy a pie a Dysart’s for your trip or to freeze…after one piece of course!

To Freeze a Dysart’s Pie:

Boxed, wrapped pies freeze well. The outer box safeguards against breakage and can stack 4 or 5 pies deep. 

Partial pies can also be frozen by wrapping well and returning to the box to enjoy another time.

Thawing a Dysart’s fruit pie, cooked prior to freezing, in the refrigerator:

A fruit pie will thaw overnight in a cooler or refrigerator and will thaw in about 12 hours.  The pie stays fresh, refrigerated, for 4 or 5 days.  (But who can keep a Dysart’s pie for that long?) 

Thawing a Dysart’s fruit pie, cooked prior to freezing, in the oven:

Preheat the oven to 425° F

Place the frozen fruit pie on a rack situated in the lower 1/2 of the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Cover lightly with foil.

Reduce the heat to 375° F. Bake it for an additional 40 to 45 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted easily.
